MUMBAI: Reliance Infocomm will be launching a handset for around Rs 3,500 along with 10 refill vouchers of Rs 324 each. The vouchers, valid for six months, will be free with the handset. Of these, two will be loaded on the handset and the balance eight will be available in the form of coupons.
The bookings for the Reliance prepaid service is on at the retailers who have to pay the handset price upfront. Reliance closed the Rs 501 scheme around 15-30 days back to make way for the prepaid scheme. (Would you now switch to CDMA service from GSM service?)
At present, subscribers have to pay Rs 3,350 for the post-paid scheme. The exact tariffs for the prepaid segment depending on the talk time offered by the company on the refill coupon of Rs 324.
“So far, it is not known whether the company will offer 200
or 300 minutes of talk time on
the refill coupon of Rs 324,” said a retailer. Currently, most operators
are offering around Rs 150 worth of talktime on a recharge coupon of Rs 300.
The prepaid segment of the market could see some changes in its tariffs after the Reliance launch, as operators may have to match rates. But industry sources do not expect any drastic change in tariffs.
“The tariffs are likely to be on the lines of those announced
recently by Reliance for its
post-paid services,” said a source. Operators feel the Reliance prepaid
launch may not result in a tariff war. Now that Reliance is a fully mobile
operator, it cannot offer a different tariff for its own subscribers, since
the telecom regulator, Trai , has specified that operators cannot offer differential
tariffs on their own platform.
Reliance had been waiting for the announcement of the new inter-connect charge regime byTrai before it launched its prepaid services. After the success of the Monsoon Hungama scheme, cell operators had been waiting for the Reliance prepaid launch last year. But the delay, since the product was first expected in November-end, has since taken the wind out of the launch. Companies like Bharti had announced similar schemes in the marketplace bundling the handset with talk time, for the post-paid and prepaid segments.
After Reliance, Tata Indicom will be the only player that is yet to launch its prepaid service. This may take at least two months or once the Tatas have augmented their capacity.
